To the Grand Canyon! The 2004 African-American Homeschoolers Family & Friends Vacation Held In Northern Arizona.

Phoenix, AZ June 2, 2004 -- To the Grand Canyon! African-American Unschoolers, a national network of Black homeschooling families, host the “2004 African-American Homeschoolers Family & Friends Vacation” at the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona. Thursday, June 3 through Saturday June 5, 2004, Camp Mather campground on the South Rim will be home to 70+ African-American homeschoolers from New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, Texas, California, Colorado and Arizona.

Coordinators Veneka Smith of Burlingame, California and Stacie Walton of Oakland, California have been planning the event since last fall. Smith says, “This trip is so exciting because it is an opportunity for our online community to meet. We share a common culture, which includes a way of life as homeschoolers. My children are really looking forward to meeting other homeschooled children who look just like them.” In addition to enjoying the grandeur of the Grand Canyon and camping on the South Rim, families will also enjoy day hikes, bus tours and the IMAX Theater.

S. Courtney Walton of Phoenix, Arizona is the founder of African-American Unschoolers and the publisher of FUNgasa: Free Oneself! The Magazine for African-American Home Educators. “African-American children are the fastest growing segment of homeschoolers,” says S. Courtney Walton. “More and more parents are becoming dissatisfied with the public schools and turning to homeschooling which offers so much more.” In addition to her work with African-American Unschoolers, S. Courtney Walton serves on the advisory board of the National African-American Homeschoolers Alliance and writes a homeschooling column for The Good News Herald in St. Louis, Missouri.
