Garden Tour Showcases Use of California Native Plants by Homeowners Throughout L.A. County

January 15 2004--Gardeners across the Southland, from the novice to the master, will have the chance to see up close the use of California native plants at the 2004 Native Garden Tour on Sunday, March 28, 2004. More than twenty gardens in communities across Los Angeles County will feature native habitats designed for wildlife, shady hillsides, Spanish-style gardens, and more.
"These native plant gardens are the true legacy of Theodore Payne, who came to California in 1893 and fell in love with the California landscape," said Frances Liau, President of the board of directors of Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants. "If you have never seen a native plant garden before, you will fall in love with natives after seeing these gardens."
Ms. Liau hopes that the tour will inspire others to create their own native gardens or include more native plants in their gardens.
The garden tour is self-guided and the gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 28. Single tickets are $25 members of the foundation and $30 for non-members. Couples tickets are $40 for members and $50 for non-members.
Tour packets with credentials, maps and individual garden details will be mailed out prior to the tour. Ticket holders can choose the gardens they want to visit. A docent and/or the garden owner will be on hand at every location to answer questions. Many of the plants will be marked and some gardens will have before and after pictures, in addition to comments about design and installation.
The gardens are located in the communities and cities of Altadena, Atwater Village, Beverly Hills, Eagle Rock, Echo Park, Glendale, Granada Hills, Lawndale, Long Beach, Mid-Wilshire, Pasadena, Sherman Oaks, Silver Lake, Studio City, Sun Valley, Tujunga and Woodland Hills.
Each ticket will entered into a raffle for prizes such as native plant gardening books from Ironwood Press and gardening tools from OSH.

In 2003, the Foundation celebrated the 100th anniversary of Theodore Payne opening his first nursery and selling California native plants and seeds.
